I try really hard to stay politically neutral in my classroom. It's not easy with all the material Obama has given us the past few years. Today is the first time I ever broke that stance and I totally didn't mean to. Oooooops.
This occurred during the last class period of the day. Teachers, you know how those go. You have just kind of given up on the day a little bit and tend to be a bit more relaxed because you are as ready, if not more, to leave than the children. Today's topic in 9th grade World History was the Persian Gulf War/War in Iraq. I started out class by asking students if they had heard of the War in Iraq before. Everyone raised their hands. Then I asked if they understood the causes of the war and what is going on in Iraq today. Zero hands. Then just quietly out of the front row one of my students mutters this: "Yeah because Obama doesn't tell us anything. Libya, anyone?" I BURST OUT LAUGHING! It was just so funny. He was dead serious about it and his comment actually made sense (which doesn't happen often) and I couldn't help myself. I didn't want the kids to know that I thought it was funny so I covered my face with the papers I was passing out to them. I couldn't even breath I was laughing so much. They all said my face was turning red so I said, "that's because I am not supposed to think that was funny but it really was."
It took about 3-4 minutes to get the class back on track after my little giggle fit. It will NEVER happen again (please bless that it won't) but it was funny/awkward while it lasted.

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 31
I am the same thing every year for Halloween - Breast Cancer Awareness. This year I had a raccoon, spider man, yoda, and a cowboy come visit me at school for this last day of BC awareness month.
My last smattering of Breast Cancer paraphernalia:
My last smattering of Breast Cancer paraphernalia:
BC timer - used frequently as you can tell by all the baking crap on it |
Given to me by my friend Nancy |
Allison and Kizzle brought this guy back from Africa - it is actually for AIDS but it totally works for BC awareness |
Cutest apron every - made by my friend Laura |
And the final one - I think it is my most dedicated piece of BC awareness: my darling license plate |

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 30
Jewelry of the breast cancer awareness variety is very easy to come by actually. These are some of my favorite pieces:
The bracelet in the upper right hand corner was a gift from my mother that she got for all the girls to wear to my grandmother's funeral. The top clasp bracelet was a gift from a student. Actually two students in two separate years both gave me a bracelet like this one. The bottom two clasp bracelets are so darling - one being from my works friends Debbie and Kathe and one is from Holly. This grouping obviously doesn't include the probably 35 rubber bracelets I have from all over the place. Now those are SUPER easy to come by.
Just to round out the night, take your groceries home in one of these:

Dick's Sporting goods is a hot bed for Breast Cancer Awareness items. They also have official NFL Breast Cancer items for sale on their website here. If you are going to buy football crap, you might as well buy it with a pink ribbon. Take a look at what they had in their stores:

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 26
I am obsessed with the pink grapefruit tic tacs. They are DELICIOUS! They are hard to find though. This year tic tac did their BC flavor as strawberry fields. Not as delicious but still just as cute.
BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 25
Baking for the cure my favorite "Food Nanny" recipe. Money from the yeast purchase goes to breast cancer and delicious bread goes in my tummy. Couldn't ask for anything better!

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 22
It's finale debate Monday so a shout out to breast cancer survivor, Ann Romney. Teachers are always a trending topic in these debates so here are some more items that decorate my classroom - that could use more funding and smaller class sizes if the money was naturally available (ie. not a stimulus):
WANTED poster my students made when my breast cancer ducky was stolen off my desk |
A student made me this pink hued photo showcasing our BC friendship bracelets she got us |

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 20
Today would be my Grammy's 85th birthday so my sister Lindsay and I listened to her funeral today. I love listening to her service.
Three years ago a group of students in one of their art classes made this breast cancer hero tape statue. They are an assignment every year in art but the students went BC awareness and donated it to my classroom. She hangs above my classroom right up front. I really have quite amazing students.

BREAST CANCER MONTH: DAY 18
Two students brought me some BC gifts the other day: hand sanitizer and pasta. It pays to be vocal about your cause as a junior high teachers because kids see the pink ribbon stuff in stores and bring it in for me all the time. They are so darling, teenagers still, but darling. The pasta is actually pink and in the shape of BC ribbons. They sell it right now at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I bought some there two weeks ago but now I have even more!

Ralph Lauren is another great supporter of breast cancer awareness. They have the Pink Pony Zipfront sweater that is comfy, darling, raises money for a cure, and an absolute necessary addition to everyone's wardrobe. You can buy it here. They have other styles and t-shirts - including girls and mens options - here.
